Kev Sykes
What motivated you to start DJing/presenting?
From around six or seven years of age I was facinated by a neighbours tape recorder this being well before the days of computers, this interest carried on and when I was old enough to buy my own tape recorders and because I loved 12″ extended mixes of tracks I had records which had a vocal version on the one side with a dub or instrumental mix on the other so I practised editing the two together to make an even longer mix the basics of my show Kev’s JukeBox.
Cutting a very long story short I ended up in getting involved with my local radio station the then Mercia Sound soon to be Mercia FM in Coventry and after having my efforts played on air in the mid to late 80’s I eventually ended working for the station in the commercial production department also being offered my own non-stop music show on Saturday nights ‘The Mercia Mix’ which ran for nearly 3 years.
What styles do you play?
Quite eclectic I think, with dance, disco, hi-nrg, jazz-funk amongst many other genres.
Do you mix or scratch or both? Or are you more of a presenter?
I scratch when I have an itch and mix a bit but mostly edit which is now all done on my computer, I said goodbye to tape in the late 90’s.
Do you play on just one of danceradiouk.com’s stations or both?
Just on Box UK, I think I’m more at home with the wider range a years there.
Outside of danceradiouk.com, who are your favourite DJ’s, bands or music artists and how have they influenced your style (if they have)?
Many many local radio presenters whom I have been lucky to work with over the years, Dave Jamieson (now retired but has a show on FAB FM), Jim Lee (on Radio 4) Dave Simms (now in Australia), Clive Skelhon (Coventry Transport Museum) the list goes on but I do love to listen to Ken Bruce (Radio 2).
What other interests do you have besides DJing/presenting on the radio?
Video editing, walks, the odd G & T.
Favourite things?
My computer, my computer oh and there’s my computer.
Sum yourself up in a sentence?
Very shy, nervous but hopefully likeable
Your desert island discs?
Gosh, depends on the mood I’m in, ask me when I’m on it.
Anything else?
Erm err, no!
