What motivated you to start DJing/presenting?

From around six or seven years of age I was facinated by a neighbours tape recorder this being well before the days of computers, this interest carried on and when I was old enough to buy my own tape recorders and because I loved 12″ extended mixes of tracks I had records which had a vocal version on the one side with a dub or instrumental mix on the other so I practised editing the two together to make an even longer mix the basics of my show Kev’s JukeBox.

Cutting a very long story short I ended up in getting involved with my local radio station the then Mercia Sound soon to be Mercia FM in Coventry and after having my efforts played on air in the mid to late 80’s I eventually ended working for the station in the commercial production department also being offered my own non-stop music show on Saturday nights ‘The Mercia Mix’ which ran for nearly 3 years.

What styles do you play?

Quite eclectic I think, with dance, disco, hi-nrg, jazz-funk amongst many other genres.

Do you mix or scratch or both? Or are you more of a presenter?

I scratch when I have an itch and mix a bit but mostly edit which is now all done on my computer, I said goodbye to tape in the late 90’s.

Do you play on just one of danceradiouk.com’s stations or both?

Just on Box UK, I think I’m more at home with the wider range a years there.

Outside of danceradiouk.com, who are your favourite DJ’s, bands or music artists and how have they influenced your style (if they have)?

Many many local radio presenters whom I have been lucky to work with over the years, Dave Jamieson (now retired but has a show on FAB FM), Jim Lee (on Radio 4) Dave Simms (now in Australia), Clive Skelhon (Coventry Transport Museum) the list goes on but I do love to listen to Ken Bruce (Radio 2).

What other interests do you have besides DJing/presenting on the radio?

Video editing, walks, the odd G & T.

My computer, my computer oh and there’s my computer.

What motivated you to start DJing/presenting?

I’ve always wanted to get involved in radio. When I was nine I presented shows on my fictional radio station. Unfortunately I came from a background where silly voices and excitability were not encouraged. So any ambition lay in the sidelines until now. I basically love music from my informative years and the memories it brings back and thanks to Box UK I am finally collating all that together.

What styles do you play?

I’m a pretty much 70’s – 90’s mainstream chart sort of person. I find security in the past. I am also a fan of the semi-forgotten tune. A song that may have been swamped surrounded by bigger hits or one that makes you think I remember this and haven’t heard it for years.

Do you mix or scratch or both? Or are you more of a presenter?

I admire anyone who can do a decent mix but presenting is definitely more me.

Do you play on just one of danceradiouk.com’s stations or both?

Just Box UK

Outside of danceradiouk.com, who are your favourite DJ’s, bands or music artists and how have they influenced your style (if they have)?

I loved the late Kevin Greening when he was on Radio 1 in the nineties, he along with Danny Baker often had me in stitches of laughter and it seemed they could run a show without thinking about it. Back before that I could just about, depending on the weather receive GWR radio from Swindon. From my bedroom in Salisbury and there was a presenter called Dave Barrett on late night who was great, sadly I read the other day that he had passed away at the end of last year.

Music wise, I go for the song rather than the artist. But I love anyone from Status Quo, Dollar and most Stock Aitken Waterman stuff to The KLF, The Petshop Boys, Moby, and Sash.

Any song that has production by Trevor Horn and Mike Batt is good too!

What other interests do you have besides DJing/presenting on the radio?

I love old television shows, old Doctor Who and Top Of The Pops form a large part of my DVD collection. I also have a soft spot for old episodes of ‘Soaps’ including EastEnders, Brookside, Jupiter Moon and Eldorado! Plus a fan of lunchtime drama Doctors.

Favourite things?

Well apart from the Wife, to be entertained, oh and sleeping!

Sum yourself up in a sentence?

A jumble of conflicting, confusing emotions with contradiction and a stomach!

Every edition of Now That’s What I call Music from the 80’s and 90’s would be nice!

Anything else?

Robski

Robski

What motivated you to start DJing/presenting?

The love of music. From the age of 7, I used to wire up 2 stereo systems at home and play records on both fading in on 1 stereo whilst fading out on the other. Then I started hearing 2 songs played together at the same time, beat matched – I wanted to get involved and at the age of 15 purchased my first pair of turntables.

What styles do you play?

In my own time, I play all different styles, which is why I am involved with both Box and Dance UK stations.
In clubs, I prefer to play DNB/Jungle. I used to DJ in nightclubs in Birmingham, but hated that when you did a party set and you didn’t play someone’s favourite – they came to have a drunken moan and wanted it playing now! (Sorry love, “I Will Survive” will not fit in to the new 90’s chart selection).

Do you mix or scratch or both? Or are you more of a presenter?

I mix and scratch – I mix my tunes whilst scratching my bollocks. Who said men can’t multitask! I could never get the trigger finger going at the right time with scratching, coordination of moving the record and the crossfader at different speeds seemed impossible.

Do you play on just one of danceradiouk.com’s stations or both?

I have played on many internet radio stations, some very popular ones, but once I found Dance UK/Box UK, there was only one station for me. I started on Dance UK only, but now have a regular slot on both Dance UK and Box UK.

Outside of danceradiouk.com, who are your favourite DJ’s, bands or music artists and how have they influenced your style (if they have)?

Favourite DJ’s – I love the old DJ Hype, Andy C – I say Old because I don’t like the stuff they play today. How have they influenced me? Well they have tried to do ‘something different’ which is where I got the idea of mashups of rnb/dnb etc. I LOVE Madonna, liking the Pet Shop Boys productions too. The list could go on and on.

What other interests do you have besides DJing/presenting on the radio?

I enjoy hill Walking, cycling, camping, photography – most things outdoors. I also enjoy a nice ale or two!

Favourite things?
